Octopus Energy NZ is revolutionising the energy experience for Kiwis. We use cutting-edge technology and the expertise of passionate energy specialists to deliver smarter, more sustainable energy solutions.
As part of the global Octopus Energy Group our goal is to make a big green dent in the universe. Market conditions in New Zealand meant we haven’t been able to take on lots of customers like we’d love to do. Instead we’ve focussed on advocating for market reform and testing and trying innovative new things that show New Zealand how we can use energy better to make our renewables go further.
To that end we’re all about moving energy use to reduce peak demand. That’s why all our plans feature Time of Use (ToU) pricing to better reflect the costs based on when you use electricity and to encourage people to move their usage away from the peak demand times. ToU plans won’t suit everyone, but if you use most electricity at non-peak times, or can move your use to these times, Octopus could be a great option for you.
We believe in giving customers control. So our residential plans have no fixed-term contracts or break fees. If we aren’t the best for your needs you are always free to take advantage of a better offer.
We also think that the New Zealand electricity market needs to change to deliver reliable, affordable energy for homes and businesses. We’ve put a lot of effort into advocacy, submissions, and industry and government working groups. The Electricity Authority’s “level playing field” rules as well as the ongoing Consumer Data Right work are just two areas we’ve made major contributions to.
Octopus Energy UK’s TrustPilot ratings show how our approach to customer service works. While those ratings don’t include New Zealand electricity customers, our attitude and how we empower our team to own solutions from end-to-end is exactly the same here as overseas. Plus, our team in NZ answers the phone in less than a minute*.
Powered by Octopus’s Kraken technology platform, Octopus offers an experience that is both innovative and easy to use. Kraken’s smart technology enables us to deliver valuable insights into your energy use. This means you can see your energy usage, monitor solar exports to the grid, and identify opportunities for savings, helping you make better decisions.
We’ve introduced several innovations to the New Zealand market, some of which we’re pleased to see have since been copied by other retailers. Hot Water Control puts customers in charge of when their water heating happens, allowing them to reduce costs. Saving Sessions show how everyone can play a part in helping balance the grid when supply is tight. We’re also one of the few retailers, maybe the only one, passing on the new network peak export rebates fully and transparently.
We reckon Octopus Energy is good for “NZ Inc.” too! As well as all the work we’re doing to try to improve the local energy market, we employ lots of smart humans here. The team of 16 running the New Zealand retail electricity business is only a small part of the picture. There are also around 100 people, mostly based in our Wellington office, delivering high quality, after-hours support to our UK customers. We’re literally exporting customer service. And let’s not forget the approximately 20 NZ-based people in the Kraken team.
That’s what we mean by doing energy better! Join Octopus Energy NZ today.
