Zero Bills homes typically generate about double the energy than they consume. To achieve this, the house must be off the gas grid (i.e. use electric heating), maintain an internet connection and be kitted out with solar PV and a battery. We will assess, for a given home, the minimum hardware requirements to be eligible for Zero Bills.

We are happy to assess any house for Octopus Zero Bills compatibility, but practically, newer houses with good thermal characteristics are most likely to work for Zero Bills.

Yes, provided the home is in an area Octopus supplies. As long as the required solar/battery system can be installed, we are happy to offer Zero Bills. Some areas may require larger solar/battery systems due to differing network costs and predicted solar generation.

No. The cost of the solar panels and battery will have to be covered by the homeowner. We are happy to chat about potential installers.

We currently guarantee Zero Bills for 5 years. This will be updated over time.

To make it as simple as possible, we have only one Fair Usage Allowance – on total electricity consumption across the year. This is set at or above historical usage (or expected usage for a new build).

Our Zero Bill offer incorporates your electricity exports. You will not be paid anything additional for exports.

The customer will be billed at our OctopusFlexi import unit rate (still no fixed charge) for electricity imported above the Fair Usage Allowance.

You will be responsible for maintaining your solar and battery system and ensuring there is a working internet connection so we can communicate with your battery. If there is an issue we reserve the right to move the customer to a different tariff (likely OctopusFlexi). You may need to clean your solar panels from time to time!

If you add a new large energy consuming device it will likely mean you are using more than your Fair Usage Allowance. Any usage over the Fair Usage Allowance will be charged at the OctopusFlexi tariff rate. If you have an EV that we can smart charge let us know because we might be able to manage this for you at a cheaper rate.
